World TB Day

World Tuberculosis Day, falls on the 24th of March each year.
It is designed to build public awareness about the global epidemic of tuberculosis and efforts to eliminate the disease. Today tuberculosis causes the deaths of about 1.6 million people each year, mostly in the Third World.

I find that most of the TB awareness campaign around the world are effective and in some instances quite scary, but in all honesty I am 32 years old and have never ever seen any of the posters or flyers.  I think that there should be alot more done about informing and educating the public on this disease. Please visit the Gallery for some of the pictures and posters that I have found on the Internet.

March 24th commemorates the day in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch astounded the scientific community by announcing that he had discovered the cause of tuberculosis, the TB bacillus. At the time of Koch’s announcement in Berlin, TB was raging through Europe and the Americas, causing the death of one out of every seven people. Koch’s discovery opened the way toward diagnosing and curing tuberculosis.
